Cleavage, Controversy and a Puppy- A Look at GoDaddy Superbowl Commercials 2005 to Present

Standard

It’s hard to argue the memorability of GoDaddy’s Superbowl ad campaigns. Since their first airing in 2005, GoDaddy has struggled to get what CEO Bob Parsons calls “appropriately edgy” ads approved for Prime Time T.V.

In years past, there have been two things you can count on when it comes to a GoDaddy commercial- Controversy and a whole lot of cleavage. Typically, the controversy arises as a direct result of said cleavage, or, the “over sexualization of women” as some would call it. However, their 2015 Superbowl ad took a whole different turn: No cleavage and a whole lot of controversy.

GoDaddy released their Superbowl 2015 ad spot earlier this week. Within hours, hundreds of thousands of angry viewers took to Twitter and Facebook to express their outrage. A Change.org petition was created to pull the ad, and gathered over 42,000 signatures in what became a “Confirmed Victory” just hours later.

Before we get to that ad, here is a look back at all of GoDaddy’s Superbowl commercials.

Superbowl XXXIX 2005
“Broadcast Hearing”

Superbowl XL 2006
“Send in the Godaddy Girl”
**I had to search far and wide to find this video. It took 13 revisions to get it approved**

Superbowl XLI 2007
“Marketing Department”

Superbowl XLII 2008
**The original ad was titled “Exposure” and featured Danica Patrick and animatronic beavers. The network deemed the spot “too racy” and rejected it. Instead, GoDaddy aired an ad called “Spot On” which directed viewers to their website to see the banned ad. The ad was a success, logging more than one million views of “Exposure”.

“Spot On”

“Exposure”

Superbowl XLIII 2009
“Baseball” and “Shower”
**GoDaddy purchased two spots for 2009. The following video features both commercials back-to-back.

Superbowl XLIV 2010
“Spa” and “News”
**GoDaddy again purchased two spots for 2010, both of which were banned. The banned version of “Spa” was released on the internet. “News” was used to replace the banned “Lola” commercial. All four videos are posted below.

“Spa” as aired

“Spa” internet only

“News”

“Lola”

Superbowl XLV 2011
“The Contract”

“The Contrat” full version

Superbowl XLVI 2012
“Body Paint”

Superbowl XLVII 2013
“Bar Refaelis Big Kiss”

“Bar Refaelis Big Kiss” Full version

Superbowl XLIX 2014
“Bodybuilder” and “Puppet Master”
**GoDaddy purchased two spots. The second, “Puppet Master” has also been called the “I Quit” spot, in which Gwen Dean quits her job on national television. According to a report by CNN, she is a real person who REALLY quit her job.

“Bodybuilder”

“Puppet Master”

And finally-
Superbowl XLIX 2015
“The Journey Home”
Godaddy announced Tuesday that it was pulling this highly controversial ad that features an adorable little Golden Retriever puppy named Buddy who bounces out of the back of a truck. His humans have no idea he’s gone missing and Buddy is faced with a series of heartbreaking obstacles in his journey home. The ad pulls you in right away and you’re hoping for a Budweiser-type happy ending. Not the case here. In fact, the ad was originally intended to poke fun at Budweiser, who has a history of using puppies, and has been teasing an ad featuring a puppy for the big game on February 1. So why the controversy? Well, poor Buddy survives train tracks, highways, bridges and a rainstorm only to be boxed up and “shipped out,” all thanks to the breeder’s new website created on Godaddy.com.

In a release titled “We’re Listening, Message Received”, GoDaddy said, “This morning we previewed GoDaddy’s Super Bowl spot on a popular talk show, and shortly after a controversy started to swirl about Buddy, our puppy, being sold online. The responses were emotional and direct. Many people urged us not to run the ad…. The net result? We are pulling the ad from the Super Bowl. You’ll still see us in the Big Game this year, and we hope it makes you laugh. Finally, rest assured, Buddy came to us from a reputable and loving breeder in California. He’s now part of the GoDaddy family as our Chief Companion Officer and he’s been adopted permanently by one of our longtime employees.”

Kane’s Favorite Things Week of 1/26/15

Standard

Kanes Favorite ThingsI know, I’m late. So sorry!! Hectic weekend spilled over, and there was definitely a case of The Mondays at Castle Kane.

This week features new boots, an old movie and some special art work.

Music:
Shattered Dreams was inspired by a Rascal Flatts song, so it was really easy to put together a playlist for the book. Shattered Lies on the other hand, wasn’t so easy. During the first draft of SD, I wasn’t even sure Tori would get a book. But the more I dove into her character, the more I realized the girl had layers. Yeah, she’s a selfish narcissist. But she’s also damaged. So, I was scrolling through the ole Facebook feed, and one of my best friends shared a song. Stacy and I are pretty much cut from the same cloth, so I always watch the videos she posts. The title alone was enough to put me in Tori’s mind, but as the song continued, I realized that Stacy had just done what I could not. She found THE song for Shattered Lies. So here it is 🙂 “She Don’t Love You” by Eric Paslay

Movies:
Today’s movie is a throw back. We’ve all read the classic Romeo and Juliet. Most of us have probably seen two or three versions of it. My personal favorite is the 1996 version directed by Baz Luhrmann. First, I LOVE John Leguizamo, and second- Dagger.

996RNJ_John_Leguizamo_013

Who’s John Leguizamo? One of the funniest comedians in the history of ever! He’s the star of my personal favorite, The Pest, and his role in Romeo and Juliet was by far the best portrayal of Tybalt I have ever seen.

When the movie first came out, I was a teenager and too young to truly appreciate the genius and artistry of the symbols that were sort of “hidden in plain sight”. While the language and theme of the story remains faithful to the original, it is the symbols integrated into this modern interpretation that make it so powerful. Mercutio’s Dagger is the embodiment of that.

800px-RJ-02092Romeo and Juliet is currently available on Netflix Streaming. I highly recommend you watch it, and keep an eye out for all the different symbols hidden in this modern portrayal of a classic tragedy.

Books:
Last week I started looking for a new book to read in my free time. Unfortunately, what I was looking for I just couldn’t find. So I decided to reread one of my favorites- Loving Lies by Lora Leigh. On her Facebook page, Lora revealed the cover for Jazz’s book. I cannot tell you how excited I am about this. Loving Lies has been the single most influential book in my writing career, and I am so excited to hear that both Jazz and Zach will be getting their own books!! Click this link to see the cover and read a blurb for Wicked Lies.

Funny:
Easily one of my favorite songs and who doesn’t love watching cat videos?? Besides, I must pay homage to my favorite cat lover Amanda Afterdark 😉

Fashion:
Today’s fashion fave is brought to you by Closet Kane and an Amazon Goddess.
Love, love, LOVE boots, and this week, I added two more pair to my ever growing collection. It’s impossible to pick a favorite, but this is the pair I put on first.

I’m an Instagram addict, and one of my favorite pages belongs to McKinli Hatch. She is a professional fitness competitor and Amazon Goddess, with an amazing eye for fashion. She runs a blog and online store that are quickly becoming my favorite pages to visit. I love her print leggings and can’t seem to get enough of her cardigans and accessories. Check her out!

Epic:
Last Friday, my son brought home a drawing one of his friends made for me. It was such a sweet and thoughtful gift, I HAD to share it. One of my favorite shirts features that little phrase across the front. Thank you so much Pierce! I LOVE it!!!

20150126_174750Honorable Mention:
A&E for their daily Criminal Minds marathons.

Kane’s Favorite Things Week of 1/19/15

Standard

Kanes Favorite ThingsThe next installment of Kane’s Favorite Things features a trip down memory lane, cops being funny and some pretty epic artwork.

And!! We’ve added a new category!

Music:
This week, I have a little game for you to play. It’s called YouTube-a-Thon, The 90s Edition. Go to YouTube.com and punch in the name of a favorite singer or band from the 90s. Watch the first video that comes up. Then click on a random video from the recommendations on the right side of the screen. Do this ten times and see where you end up. I started out with “Thank God I Found You” by 98 Degrees and ended up with “The Bad Touch” by Bloodhound Gang. Talk about a little trip down memory lane!

Movies:
Big Congratulations going out to Clint Eastwood! American Sniper set a January record with $90 million in ticket sales and landed 6 Oscar Nominations, including Best Film and Best Actor. If you haven’t been to see this movie yet, GO! Go now!!

Books:
Over the weekend, Mia Sheridan made a HUGE announcement on her Facebook page. Just in case you missed it, here it is:
Archer’s Voice has been optioned!!!!!!
10686821_1118190788194643_973757247648560950_nIn her Facebook announcement, Mia says, “I am THRILLED to announce that Lauren Levine, award winning producer of Bridge to Terabithia, has purchased the film rights to Archer’s Voice!”
Congratulations Mia!!!!! Can’t wait to see it come to life!!! If you haven’t read Archer’s Voice yet, here are the links:

Funny:
If you haven’t seen the Dover Police Dash Cam video of Officer Jeff Davis jamming out to Shake it Off, you’re about to. If you’ve already seen it, watch it again, because it’s hilarious!!

Over the weekend, Taylor Swift posted this on her Twitter in response to the video:
10329152_829966990378424_7274886429866401707_n

Watching that video reminded me of another video that made the rounds a while back. This one from two officers with the Rosenberg Police Department jamming out to Dark Horse.

Now, how cool would it be if the boys and girls in blue did All About That Bass???

Fashion:
This week is a new t-shirt brought to you by the one and only Neil deGrasse Tyson. This man is one of the greatest minds of our generation. His contributions to science and philosophy are without measure. If you haven’t had a chance to yet, I highly recommend you watch an episode of The Cosmos on National Geographic. It is one of our favorite shows.

Epic:
Did you catch that little switch there??
My friend Zack Kullis shared something on Facebook last week that was pretty epic. Well, you can usually count on anything Zack shares to be pretty epic, but this one definitely takes the cake. His post featured a pretty gnarly rendition of Scorpio and an article link- 12 Zodiac Signs Reborn As Terrifying Monsters By Damon Hellandbrand.

Just. WOW. This artist has the kind of talent that scares and inspires you at the same time.
Like Zack, I was never quite content with the traditional imagery used to represent my sign, so I couldn’t wait to see what this new one looked like. One word people, say it with me:

EPIC

She’s stunning! Beautiful in the most horrifying way. I love it so much, I’ve made it my profile picture on Facebook. Click on the article to see your David Hellandbrand zodiac sign, and click on the picture to check out some of the artist’s other works. If you like dark, edgier art, you are going to love this guy!
Oh, and one other thing Zack shared this week that was pretty epic- check out this killer volley! Talk about the edge of your seat!!

Honorable Mention:
Hostess released their limited edition Red Velvet Cupcakes this week, grabbed like five boxes….

Kanes Favorite Things

Kicking off the New Year with a new weekly post: Kane’s Favorite Things.

I scour the internet, looking for my favorite things and bring them all to you right here. We will start with six categories, but if you want to see more, or if you have something you want me to check out for an existing category, just send me a message 🙂

Music:
This one goes to my girl Meghan Trainor! Sony Music released her debut studio album, Title, on January 9. That Bass Tour starts in February and I can’t wait to see her in concert!

Movies:
Hands down, this one goes to American Sniper. This movie is the single most important MUST SEE for 2015. Chris Kyle is the embodiment of a true American hero. Not a dry eye in the theater.

Books:
Rescue Me by Kathy Coopmans hit eStore shelves today. I power read it and recommend you do too. It’s raw and gripping. Definitely a must-read. I will be sharing my full review on Wicked Women Book Blog later this week.

10882158_1540761166173634_2042343860983619512_nFunny:
Okay, this one’s probably going to get me in some trouble, but it was too funny to pass up. See, I’m from the Great State of Texas, but I have no love for The Cowboys. I do love the Packers though, and last night’s game was pretty awesome…for The Packers 😉 Anyway, I know technically it wasn’t Romo’s fault this time, but you can usually trace every goof back to him, so I gotta say this meme wins the internet today 🙂

1525698_10151794166981481_1283575360_nFashion:
“Girl Bye” is my must have shirt of the year! I’ve been hooked on The Real Housewives of Atlanta from day one, and Nene is my absolute favorite. At least once a day, you will hear me say something Nene says and it’s usually this or “The Thirst is Real.” Her “Nene’ism” shop is here, but she also has a clothing line out with HSN that has some gorgeous, and classy, pieces in it. I’ve already ordered the faux leather leggings and the blanket cardigan in ivory.

Adorable:
How can anyone NOT find this video of a wiener dog learning a new trick adorable?? Come on! It’s a wiener puppy! And he’s ringing a bell!!!!

2014 was an Amazing Year! Despite a few setbacks, I accomplished everything I set out to do and more!!! 2015 is off to an awesome start! I’ve made a few resolutions for this year, but those are for another post 😉

Updates and MS Goodies
My very first Paranormal Romance made it to the formatter before (woohooo!!!) the January 1st deadline and I can’t wait to share the final product with you. Of Blood and Lust is a novella that will appear in an anthology to benefit The National Autism Association and will be out soon. The story started out one way, then took a whole different direction, and the possibilities for more are endless.

10891727_605172899588341_1108754730691661700_n

While brainstorming for this story, I pulled the old laptop (the one missing the ‘F’ key, and now also the ‘F5’ key) out of storage, just to see what was on it. The original MS for Shattered Dreams was typed on that antique, and I knew there were a few other stories I was kicking around on there somewhere. Not only did I find what I was looking for, there were also two nearly complete manuscripts and a finished HR! The first MS is a children’s rhyming story that I wrote for my youngest daughter when she was home schooled. It was just a fun way to teach her about different things- the states, continents, colors etc. If we decide to publish, it will probably be illustrated by The Hooligans. The second MS is a darker contemporary centered around a Mexican cartel leader. It doesn’t have a name or even a cover concept, but reading through it certainly sparks a few ideas. The story feels pretty good where it’s at, so it will more than likely get sent to the editor and then to some Betas in the next few weeks.

Shattered Lies is not quite where it needs to be yet. Does that ever happen to you? You think you have the story where it needs to be, but the more you read it, the more it feels like something is missing. That is kind of where we’re at with SL. So until ALL the Betas are happy, we’re going to hold off on the release.

stephen-king-quotes-books-are-a-uniquely-portable-magic

My TBR List just got EPIC!
Santa brought The Hooligans laptops for Christmas. My oldest daughter, who is almost 12, was so excited, she couldn’t wait to start using her’s. She said, “I want to write a book too!” How cool is that??? Well, it gets better! She’s finished writing it!!! She said she wants to read through it a couple more times, “like you do”, before she lets anyone else read it. But she did tell me the book is called “Chasing Waterfalls” and it’s a funny story about “You, Uncle Chris and Aunt Niki.” The Man and I are both very excited to read it and I can officially say that Chasing Waterfalls is the first book on my 2015 TBR List. She’s asked for Mommy’s help to get it published, so BOLO!!!

While I was scrolling through the ole Facebook feed this morning, this little gem caught my eye.

Author stalking commenced immediately!
